Mechanical Engineer Job Description  

Position Summary:

  • Design quality, engineered solutions that meet customer’s needs, meet or beat budget constraints, and allow for efficient manufacture.

  • Utilize AEC mechanical design and CAD staff to minimize overall engineering cost and maximize ability to simultaneously execute multiple projects.

  • Maintain awareness and control of project cost, quality, scope, and schedule to ensure on time delivery of the project within budget.

  • Support Management.  Make Department Manager and Project Manager aware of all current or potential problems.  Report to management all findings on jobs that would affect costs, schedules, employees or customers.

  • Support AEC QMS by reviewing project scope, budget, design schedule and design plan on a regular basis.

  • Participate in design reviews as required and requested by Project Manager.

  • Document design reviews and meetings held with the customer.

  • Develop and maintain relationships with customers

  • Represent AEC at meetings with customers as needed.

  • Assist in assuring that customer commitments are met.

  • Develop test plans for machinery and equipment, applying knowledge of engineering technology.

  • Where required, conduct research and development activities concerned with integration and testing of electronic and mechanical components, products and systems and in development of applications for commercial and industrial use.

  • Conduct analytical studies on engineering proposals to develop design for products, such as control panels, equipment, machines and associated subsystems components, utilizing and applying engineering principals, research data and proposed product specification.

  • Apply mechanical theory, mechanical testing procedures and related knowledge to layout, build, test, troubleshoot, repair and modify developmental and production equipment.

  • Supervise installation crews and assist in the installation of jobs for field installations.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Understand factory automation technology and equipment.  Design mechanical systems for automation or control of manufacturing equipment.

  • Review product design for compliance with engineering principles, company standards, and customer contract requirements, and related specifications.

  • Prepare interim and completion project reports.

  • Be familiar with computer assisted design/drafting equipment and software such as Autocad to develop designs.

  • Be familiar with all applicable mechanical codes associated with the design and fabrication of the equipment.

  • Coordinate activities concerning technical developments, scheduling, and resolution of engineering design and test problems.

  • Be aware of all aspects of assigned projects.

  • Bring to attention of management any issues, concerns, missed schedules, problems that will impact projects as soon as you are aware of them.

  • Be responsible for customer satisfaction, profitability, on time delivery, service and quality.

  • Develop new applications of mechanical components to products or systems.

  • Evaluate existing systems and equipment, and recommend design modifications to eliminate causes of malfunctions or changes in system requirements.

  • Prepare reports based on findings and present reports to peers and management.

  • Perform preliminary engineering based on customer requests.

  • Review project instructions and blueprints to ascertain test specifications, procedures, objectives, test equipment, nature of technical problems, and possible solutions, such as part redesign, substitution of material or parts, or rearrangement of parts or subassemblies.

  • Assist employees in CAD, manufacturing, quality, and planning as required.

  • Set up and conduct tests of complete units and components under operational conditions to investigate design proposals for improving equipment performance or other factors, or to obtain data for development, standardization, and quality control.

  • Analyze, indicate and calculate test results in relation to design or rated specifications and test objectives and modify or adjust equipment to meet specifications.

  • Handle changes and problems related to product assigned.

  • Record test procedures and results, numerical and graphical data and recommendations for change in product or test method.

  • When directed, supervise or coordinate the work of designers and other technical support personnel.

  • Act as technical expert for internal and external customers.

  • Provide technical support to the fabrication shop.

Other Responsibilities

  • Perform other work-related duties as assigned.

  • Work as a member of a design team, cooperating with AEC management in an effective manner to perform engineering work of a high quality, with no errors.

  • Work in a productive manner.  While on company time, do not conduct personal business or business not related to AEC’s primary business, unless specifically approved by the supervisor.

  • Take care to produce work which is right the first time.

  • Be aware of budget and schedule constraints on all work executed for AEC.  Make every effort to complete assignment on time and on schedule.

  • Treat all AEC information and customer information in a confidential manner.

  • Travel to customers’ factories or offices and remain overnight when required to support engineering, design, and installation of projects.

  • Prepare and submit reports when required to inform management of status of project work.

  • Understand and abide by office as well as QMS policies and procedures.

  • Inform supervisor of problems or issues which affect the companies’ ability to meet customer requirements.

  • Maintain and continually improve technical and professional abilities described above and required to perform assigned tasks.

  • Maintain and continually improve an understanding of the current state of factory automation technology.

  • Never say or imply anything to a vendor or a customer which could commit AEC to supply services or products or to purchase services or products.

  • Never discuss project cost, project invoicing, contract status, changes in the Scope of Supply of work with any customer, vendor, or other person not associated with AEC.

  • Avoid any discussion concerning customers, projects, contracts, finances, costs, or proposals with persons not associated with AEC.

  • Avoid any discussion concerning personal behavior or circumstances of customers, other AEC employees, or vendors with persons not associated with AEC.

  • Promptly inform AEC management of any change in customer status or any information on customer business which may affect AEC’s relationship with the customer or with work in progress.

  • Avoid arguments with customers or vendors.

ISO Policy and Procedures

  • Learn and understand AEC Quality Policy.

  • Uphold AEC Quality Management requirements.

  • Understand AEC QMS structure and purpose.

  • Participate in formal and informal policy audits to help AEC maintain ISO certification.

  • Be familiar with the AEC Procedures and Practice Manual.  Refer to this manual for information on procedures.

  • Perform process audits as requested.

Education, Experience and Skills Required

  • Bachelors Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related fields or Associate of Science Degree in Engineering, Drafting, or related field.

  • Two years related engineering or technician experience.

  • Strong written, verbal, analytical, and interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to use Solidworks, AutoCAD, Microsoft Excel, Word, Visio, PowerPoint, and Outlook.

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.  Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.  Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry.  Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.  Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
